The M.I.A. Music Video “Jimmy” Is Freakin’ Awesome!!
Mathangi “Maya” Arulpragasam was born on July 17, 1977. She is a British vocalist, songwriter, composer, record producer and visual artist. M.I.A. often features a range of elements of genres including grime, hip-hop, ragga, dancehall and electro on her albums.
Currently a remixed version of “Jimmy” is playing on a local dance music radio station here in the S.F. bay area and the response has been huge. M.I.A. has strong political messages in her music and it is attracting lots of fans. Having spent time living through civil war in Sri Lanka she has seen first hand that a lot can be improved upon in the world.
In 2005, her debut album, “Arular”, was nominated for the Mercury Prize. In 2007, her second album, “Kala”, was released to huge critical success. Rolling Stone Magazine gave it 4 1/2 stars out of a possible 5. This music video and single are hands down one of the best of 2008.

I just saw her at the Mezzanine in SF a few weeks ago. She has such a fun vibe on stage with her metallic spandex and retro reggae stripper moves (bet you didn’t know that was a dance style, huh?)
Her signature move seems to be inviting the whole crowd on stage during a song or two. It’s getting pretty crazy.
