Music Review - Sarah McLachlan “Wintersong”
GRADE: C+
I am a fan of Sarah’s even though her songs have been played out so many times on the radio, commercials and in restaurants etc. I cannot even listen to her albums anymore. I have just heard them so many times, I can’t bare to listen to them again. When I heard Sarah was putting out a Christmas c.d. I was very excited. Her last c.d. didn’t blow up like to previous ones so I was looking forward to hearing some new material from her.
In pure Sarah style this collection of tunes is somber at times, cozy and soft other times and generic for the rest. Sarah isn’t trying to reinvent the wheel by covering some of these Christmas standards, which is a bit of a drag. I would like to see some different arrangements for a handful of these tunes. “Silent Night” is pleasant enough, but slow and plain.
“I’ll be Home For Christmas” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” are the two best tracks on this c.d. But the new material just doesn’t hold up to the same holiday charm. McLachlan has always had a flawless, timeless sound to her singing and here it is no different. But instead of picking up the beat with some of these choices, she slows things down. Much like a roaring fire on a winters day, this c.d. will create terrific warm snuggly holiday moments.
If you are hosting a holiday party or want background music at your office party, this c.d. is a good choice. Sufjan Stevens’ Christmas album uses much of the same material as McLachlan, but in a more inventive and creative fashion. These are just your run of the mill traditional songs for the whole family to enjoy. And if you are a fan of Sarah than you should probably go out and purchase this, your Christmas will be festive and light if you do.
