Music Review - Peter Bjorn & John “Writer’s Block”
GRADE: A
At the moment Peter, Bjorn and John are experiencing an underground popularity which is similar to when Gnarls Barkley and Gorillaz hit it big out of nowhere recently. Much like when “Feel Good Inc.” by the Gorillaz and “Crazy” from Gnarls Barkley came out, Peter, Bjorn and John’s first single off of “Writer’s Block” called “Young Folks” is crossing dance and pop music lines and is becoming universally loved. “Young Folks” is a revelation, it’s one of those songs that makes you think, “where has this tune been my whole life”?. It is insanely infectious and catchy and is already my pick for song of the year.
The rest of “Writer’s Block” is equally as ingenious as it’s first single. The two versions of “Let’s Call It Off” are both familiar sounding 80’s flashbacks with a superb hook. “Amsterdam” is another Beck-like song that has a mellow, stoner sound which is perfect for the summer heat. Most of the tracks on “Writer’s Block” impressed me. “Object of my Affection” is another solid single and a great follow up to “Young Folks”. Check out the video for the song “Object of my Affection” below:
I couldn’t help but make comparisons to Belle & Sebastian while listening to Peter, Bjorn & John’s “Writer’s Block”, and that isn’t a bad thing, Belle & Sebastian just happens to be one my favorite bands. As an indie pop album “Writer’s Block” is a resounding success and it left me excited to hear what Peter, Bjorn & John will put out in the future. If you want to hear some music that is alternative (and is catchy) then go pick up this c.d. when you get a chance, you will be awfully glad that you did.
