Music Review - Feist “The Reminder”

Feist is a rare musical find that keeps giving long after you discover her mellow, folky blend of pop music. Her debut album “Let It Die” is a modern classic filled to the brim with timeless melodies and haunting sounds. When “Let It Die” was released there was not much known about the former “Broken Social Scene” member, but through huge word of mouth and buzz that c.d. became a cult hit thanks to the Bee-Gee’s cover of “Inside and Out”, the fun lounge influenced “One Evening” and the blast from the past sounding “Mushaboom”.

I have been excited to hear Feist’s new c.d. “The Reminder” for a while now, and the pay off was well worth it. Feist has once again crafted a perfectly relaxing mix of tunes that showcase this genius songwriter and singer’s talents. “1 2 3 4″ is already my favorite single of 2007 so far. It is a terrifically breezy tune which has summer song written all over it. Even though this c.d. is adult contemporary with Jazz influences, I think it could transcend into the pop community. It definitely has the catchy sound that is perfect for those Starbucks collections. “The Reminder” is a modern folk/jazz classic in my eyes. Feist has a voice that sounds so familiar, and yet fresh at the same time.

“My Moon, My Man” shows off Feist’s rock n’ roll side without too much grit and hard edge….and she pulls it off gloriously. “Sea Lion Woman” also has a darker vibe that blends well with the other lighter fair on this recording. “Limit To Your Love” and “So Sorry” have a calming effect that is great for long relaxing car rides. “I Feel It All” has a bouncy pop sound that is infectious and also great to sing to on those tiresome car trips.

“The Reminder” is the perfect companion piece to Feist’s first c.d. “Let It Die”. It shows growth and proves Feist’s status as a innovator of modern adult music. I am hoping this c.d. will put Feist on the pop culture map. It has already secured a spot in my top albums of the year. I am excited to see Feist’s career evolve and to see where her success will take her. Her fun, innocent lyrics are a fresh breath of air in a world full of music that is cynical and mean spirited. Feist is the kind of artist that you discover and want to share with every music fan you know. So here it is, go get this c.d. NOW!
