Music Review - Bjork “Volta”
GRADE: B+
Bjork has always been an oddball within the pop music landscape, to say the least. Her last two discs have been experimental with bizarre arrangements and concepts. Bjork has been concentrating on more earthly sounds and influences on her lat two c.d.’s but on “Volta” she is back to her fast paced roots. Bjork must have realized that her fans needed to hear more of the funky electronic productions they are used to from her “Debut” and “Post” days. Although these songs are anything but mainstream, they have a pop feel to them that is a warm welcome from the A capella vocal instrumentation tracks on “Medulla”.
“Earth Intruders” is a brilliantly built song with that original Bjork fingerprint all over it. It has a pulsing beat that is infectious. If you caught Bjork’s performance of this song on “Saturday Night Live” recently then you know that this track is perfect performed live. Her backing chorus of women singers from Iceland are musically haunting and a great addition to this record also.
“Innocence” is a trippy little ditty with an explosive chorus and futuristic sound. This is classic “Homogenic” Bjork at her best. The song “Vertebrae by Vertebrae” sounds like a B-side taken straight off of her brilliant “Selma Songs” c.d. for the musical masterpiece “Dancer In The Dark”. “I See Who You Are” and “Pneumonia” are two mellow tracks which show off Bjork’s un-challenged vocal range.
In conclusion this c.d. is a great addition to her progressive pop music collection. Bjork stands out for many reasons, but her writing and musical arranging skills are unparalleled. No one will ever have quite the same style or power as Bjork does, and for that I am glad that she is still putting out quality music that is ahead of it’s time.
