Music Review - Amy Winehouse “Back To Black”
GRADE: A
Amy Winehouse is one of the freshest faces in music to come along in a while. The buzz has been building for months about her new c.d. “Back To Black”. And rightfully so, this c.d. is a classic Jazz influenced urban record full of surprises. Winehouse has a maturity in her voice that surpasses all other female singers on the charts right now. Her raspy and soulful voice remind me of Nina Simone or Ella Fitzgerald.
Most people are talking about Winehouse’s first single “Rehab”, which is a great fun radio friendly pop song. But I love the styling of “Me and Mr. Jones” and “You Know I’m No Good”, both of which sound as if they were plucked from the early 60’s. There is a strong Motown vibe underlining each of these tunes that is refreshing and familiar at the same time. Winehouse has a particular style that is soothing and relaxing, but the lyrics crackle with wit and energy.
Many people are talking about Winehouse’s irresponsible lyrics and unhealthy look and questioning if she is handling success well. Pictures that have surfaced on the internet do nothing to quiet these rumors. All of the gossipy drama aside I think this c.d. is what America needs right now, let’s go back to the basics. Over stylizing and over producing is abundant on the charts these days. It is refreshing to hear something so organic and pure in an age of trite music and bands. I predict Amy Winehouse will debut at #1 and “Rehab” will make the top 10. If she doesn’t, this country just doesn’t know good music when they hear it.
