Movie Review - “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”
*** 1/2 STARS
I have always been a huge fan of comedy “spoof” movies. “Walk Hard” is much like “Airplane” and “The Naked Gun” with it’s dead on sight gags, pop culture references and over the top jokes. And just like those two brilliant films, “Walk Hard” will go down as one of the best musical satires ever filmed.
From the first few frames until the final act, “Walk Hard” is relentless with it’s biting wit and charm. John C. Riley’s pitch perfect subtle performance as “Dewey Cox” will steal your heart and have you rolling down the isles of your local movie theater. Riley completely deserves his most recently announced Golden Globe nomination for his top notch role as Cox.
“Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” is an impressive film due mainly to it’s relentless charm and smart screenplay. The storyline and the countless other “movie bio-pic” references are purely genius and extremely entertaining. It has been quite a long time that such a crafty adult comedy like this has made such an impact on me, it has all the great elements of a comedy classic.
Jenna Fischer, Kristin Wiig, Tim Meadows and Chris Parnell also contribute many laughs to this little gem as the supporting cast. As you watch “Walk Hard” you can tell that all of the actors are having a blast acting with eachother in each scene. The chemistry between Fischer and Riley is terrific, their scenes are dry and sharp and continue to tickle your funny bone throughout the movie.
“Walk Hard” is no masterpiece of cinematic art, but it is a classic, hilarious music “bio-pic” farce that is surely one of the best comedy films of 2007. Due mainly to the great direction by Jake Kasdan and the brilliant lead performance by John C. Riley this little charmer is a must see for anyone that loves to see movies that deliver smart dialog and provide countless laughs.
