Movie Review - “Superbad”
*** 1/2 STARS
The new movie “Superbad” is nothing short of comedic brilliance. Judd Apatow and his crew of writers, producers and actors have recently created a new and exciting period in Hollywood film comedies with their latest outings. “Knocked Up”, which was another Apatow charmer and surprise hit, made an instant star out of Seth Rogan who is also in “Superbad”. Much like “Knocked Up”, “Superbad” not only goes for the tits and ass jokes with a fine comedic finesse, but these foul movies also endear us to their awkwardly sweet characters.
Although “Superbad” has a familiar set up of boys trying to lose their virginity during their last summer in high school, screenwriter Rogan and Director Greg Mottola keep the premise fresh with excellent writing and acting from the supporting cast. This is especially true about the actor who plays Fogell or “McLovin”. Never before has an onscreen under age alcohol purchase been so hilariously depicted in a teen sex romp. McLovin’s scenes with the police left my sides hurting from the constant laughter.
This movie is not only a coming of age film but it is a buddy picture with heart. Jonah Hill and Michael Cera (from the brilliant t.v. show “Arrested Development”) are two of the goofiest and most hilarious film duo’s of all time. Their nerdy charm and excessive potty mouths will keep you in stitches through out this movie. The jokes in this movie have heart and create a realism many of these “nerd sex” movies don’t have.
If you can watch this film and not be able to relate to any of the teen frustrations or witty observations then you must be a humorless bastard. This is a great movie about growing up, friendships and getting laid…period. The guys that brought us “Talladega Nights”, “Anchorman”, “40 Year Old Virgin” and “Knocked Up” have once again proved that they are the current kings of smart, dirty comedies for adults.
