Movie Review - “Blades Of Glory”
*** STARS
Will Farrell has been on a roll lately. “Stranger Than Fiction” and “The Ballad Of Ricky Bobby” were both successful ventures for him. He has been putting out these funny little movies for some time now, “Old School”, “Elf”, “Anchorman” and “Zoolander” show off his terrific sense of comic timing. Of course for every good film from Farrell we get a “Bewitched” and “The Producers”. So far the fast couple of movie choices have been spot on, and now with “Blades of Glory” Will Farrell has hit his stride again.
The plot is paper thin, but the scenes with John Heder and Farrell are gut busting they are so funny. John Heder and Farrell play skating rivals until they are banned from single men’s skating for fighting. Due to a loop hole, Farrell and Heder’s characters “Chaz Michael Michaels” and “Jimmy MacElroy” are forced to skate in the couples competition. When the two get on the ice you can’t help but giggle. The best moment sin this film take place on the ice. Craig T. Nelson as the coach does a great job as a secondary character with some choice lines in the film. The best part of this film has to be the brother and sister skating team “The Van Waldenbergs” played by Amy Poehler and Will Arnett. They are hilarious as the creepy, affectionate sibling duo.
This movie is no brain teaser or piece of art, but it delivers exactly what you think it should, silly visual humor. I liked “The Ballad of Ricky Bobby” much more than this film, but it is a movie I would buy and watch multiple times. The costumes, the music and the hair and make up add the perfect comic touches to this film. Heder’s peacock costume in the beginning is inspired genius.
I was pleasantly surprised by how short the film was, but was glad it didn’t drag the joke out. I loved seeing Jenna Fischer from NBC’s “The Office” in a movie role, this and last years “Slither” show she can transcend the small screen. All in all this was a fun little movie with a great pay off…..laughs.
