Movie Review - “The Simspons Movie
*** 1/2 STARS
20 Years ago “The Simpson’s” debuted on a small FOX variety show called The Tracey Ullman show. I remember it like it was yesterday because I loved Tracey Ullman as a little 11 year old gay boy. Now years later “The Simpson’s” have become a global phenomenon which has been critically acclaimed as being the funniest t.v. show ever created. It has taken so long to see America’s favorite animated family on the big screen and I am glad to say it was well worth the wait.
Sure many will dismiss this little gem as just “an extended episode” with a couple of curse words and a nude shot of Bart’s penis. But I would say they are full of it! This movie doesn’t give you a second to come up for air. From the opening credits with Ralphie, to the rolling credits at the end (where we hear Maggie say one of her first words) the laughs keep coming.
The movie is brilliant in the way it layers it’s jokes so easily. This movie is relentless with the site gags, celebrity jokes and social satire. It is smarter than you think, and I believe after multiple DVD screenings, we will find more hidden inside jokes and pop culture references.
“The Simpson’s Movie” won’t blow you away, but it will make you laugh until your sides are sore! This movie isn’t trying to be more than it is, it just wants to stay loyal to the fans, and it does! Never before has Homer made me laugh so hard. I would definitely pick this as my favorite animated film of 2007, and as one of my favorite comedies and films of the year. I wish it would get an Academy Award nomination for best animated film, but it is not likely.
On opening weekend this movie blew away all the box office records set before it, and with good reason! This movie has been long over due and I am sure we will be seeing a sequel in the future. I know I will be one of the first to go see “The Simpson’s Movie: Part 2″. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a full fledged franchise evolve with each film becoming bigger and better with age, just like the t.v. show did. If this film doesn’t make you laugh or feel nostalgic then you are a prude, straight up!
