DVD Review - “The Ex”
GRADE: D
I had some mild high hopes for “The Ex” but I already knew the reviews were terrible for this movie before I rented it. I can see how on paper this movie looked like it was hilarious and could be profitable. The casting of Zach Braff may seem inspired, but Braff plays this role no different then his star making role on “Scrubs”. The movie tries hard to be a cross between “Meet the Fockers” and any Farrelly brothers comedy and it just doesn’t work.
First off, there are plenty of fart/ass/tit jokes to make any pre-teen chuckle. This is where the laughs will end though, this movie tries too hard to make the audience laugh. The ridiculous t.v. sitcom set up started irritating me right off of the bat. Braff and Amanda Peet are not even believable as a newly married couple. Jason Bateman does a decent job in this film, but for the most part we hate his character. Right away we know there will be some plot device that will try and create a funny situation out of his disability. It is pretty obvious that his injury is not what it seems as soon as we are introduced to his character.
Some jokes in “the Ex” made me giggle and some offended me (like the scene where Braff plays basketball with wheelchair bound athletes). All in all this film is forgettable and insulting to movie lovers. With movies like “Knocked Up” and “Superbad’ reinventing the R rated comedy, who needs trifling crap like “The Ex’? I say don’t even rent this turkey, just skip it all together.
