DVD Review - “The Devil Wears Prada”
GRADE: B-
This movie was very enjoyable and had some fun comedic moments in it which I wasn’t expecting. I really think Anne Hathaway is a rising star though. She isn’t text book model beautiful, but gives off a sweet charm that most actresses today don’t. This a text book “ugly duckling” make over chick flick, but it has charm. “Devil” though is pretty vapid, and of course has a heavy handed lesson underlining it, but all in all it was a good watch.
Meryl Streep IS an acting god, you know that right? I don’t think she has ever disappointed! Yeah, and that means “She Devil” too….I liked it, get over it! In this movie she disappears into her character as usual, and it will most likely get her another Oscar nomination. Her mix of cruelty and cunning is expressed exquisitely with just one eyebrow raised or with a snide remark. She truly plays the role with a gut wrenching hard edge that makes it hard to feel for her character. But in true Hollywood style the movie ends on a soft note.
I truly liked the fashion shots and industry inside jokes throughout this movie. The costumes are gorgeous and over the top expensive, many gay boys and ladies must drool over the label dropping that happens in this film. Do people really dress like these women? There are many scenes in “Prada” that take place within a single shot, but the clothes change as the scene moves, this is a fun trick as we get to see the fun costume choices. If you really know your stuff I am sure it would be fun to name each piece…”Oooh Jimmy Choo shoes! Ooooh a Marc Jacobs bag” etc. etc.
I have never been caught up with true fashion. I personally would never pay more than $100 for a pair of jeans. I guess it is the need for such items that made this movie shallow and real at the same time…people love fashion (and the Meryl Streep)! This movie does a good job at showing both sides to this fashion world, no matter how cheesy or preachy the ending was. This is a pop culture gem, not art, but worth a watch for sure!
