DVD Review - “Talladega Nights: The Legend Of Ricky Bobby”
GRADE: B+
With his newest outing “Talladega Nights: The Legend Of Ricky Bobby” Will Farrell has surpassed Jim Carey in the quality and success of his work. Farrell has put out hilarious hit after the other; “Talladega Nights”, “Elf”, “Anchorman”, “Zoolander”, “Kicking & Screaming”, “Stranger Than Fiction”, “Old School” and “Wedding Crashers”. These films gave him the critical and financial success Carey has been lacking as of lately. But of than again Farrell did also do “Curious George”, “The Producers”, “Bewitched” & “Starsky & Hutch”.
“Ricky Bobby” is a fun, silly ride mocking the NASCAR circuit, it’s fans and American culture all in one. Even “Borat” or Sacha Baron Cohen has a prime role in this farce. As the French race car driver, Baron gets some of the biggest laughs of the movie. Even the way he says “Ricky Bobby” makes you giggle.
Farrell plays another lovable buffoon with child like innocence and humor. But in “Ricky Bobby” the supporting characters are just as funny, especially John C. Riley as Bobby’s best friend. Their catch phrase and hand shake called the “shake and bake” is just one of the many funny moments in this movie. I knew Riley was a great acting talent, but had no idea he was a great comedic actor as well. My favorite scene with the two characters is when the family is at the dinner table saying grace. This scene had me rolling in the isles!
This movie is light fare, nothing to over the top or immature but it is just adult enough for anyone to enjoy this holiday season. I recommend this as a great Christmas present to that wacky co-worker or young family member. Or if you like to see Farrell in his prime, go rent or buy this, you will laugh yourself silly and be glad you did!
