DVD Review - “Superman Returns”
GRADE: B-
This movie was exciting, but a big disappointment at the same time. Seeing the man of steel fly like he really was meant to on the big screen almost brought tears to my eyes. But the story that followed made me angry. The legacy and memory of the original films has been crapped on by the hollow writing and over blown images in this version.
As a young gay 3 year old, I immediately fell for the fantastical imagery and story of the original Superman movies. Christopher Reeves was my first gay crush at 4 years old!! I can already see a new wave of young boys falling for Brandon Routh, and he may have a chance to convince me again with the announcement of “Superman: The Man Of Steel” being directed by Bryan Singer, again.
This movie had some of the most incredible, breathtaking special effects I have ever seen, and that sbaout it. This movie reflects the love and respect for the character more than any of the other movies, but then convoluted it with bad casting choices (Lois Lane) and blurry cinematography.
It’s true that the suit was pretty gay, but man did he look great!! The story was all in all, just o.k. I didn’t like Kate Bosworth as Lois, flat out! It is a theory of mine that you don’t hire a blond to play a brunette, the actress comes off just as fake as her hair color! Examples of flops with this curse? Angelina Jolie in “Life Or Something Like It” and Michelle Pfeiffer in “Up Close & Personal”.
I had fun with this movie in parts, but was left feeling pretty empty. Parker Posey and Kevin Spacey are fun as the villains. The action scenes are gripping but few and far between. The site of the opening credits had to be the most fun part….and that is always a bad sign. This movie is just popcorn filler, brainless drivel and pretty to look at. Let’s just wait for “Spiderman 3″ to see how this genre is really done right!
BELOW IS A PIC OF “OUT” DIRECTOR BRYAN SINGER
