DVD Review - “See No Evil”

by

GRADE: C-

I love horror movies, even though most turn out to be cheesy cliche filled turkeys. I usually give most movies in the horror genre a chance, and this time it was not for the best. In the end “See No Evil” is just a silly little movie with not much excitement to it.

The plot of this movie has been told so many times, in so many ways. A handful of troubled “teens” are sentenced to community service and have to clean out an abandoned mental institution. But there is someone lurking on the property. A huge, mentally retarded, menacing serial killer with a taste for blood.

Kane in

This character is like so many other killers; Jason (Friday The 13th), Jigsaw (Saw) and Leatherface (Texas Chainsaw Massacre) he is slow and a social outcast with an abusive mother as the cause for their homicidal ways. We learn that as a child he was put into a cage and forced to look at pornographic images while being called a sinner. This is the dumb explanation for his hobby of collecting the eyeballs of his victims. This is all familiar stuff and just ends up coming off as silly.

There are no genuine scares or gross out moments in this film. The director and writers use the same old tricks to muster of some thrills, and they fail pretty bad for a low budget horror movie. The effects are lame and the directing is all over the place. We get some fun death scenes with some over the top gore, but it doesn’t come off real at all.

This movie wasn’t as bad as “Miami Vice” but I can’t recommend it either. This is another pathetic attempt at creating a horror movie franchise and a horror movie villain just to make money. There is no creativity invested in the film, it is a basic paint by numbers splatter-fest with no surprises.
