DVD Review - “Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest”

by

GRADE: C+

I am not sure if this movie deserves all of the broo ha-ha it has recieved or the opening day box office record title, I mean is it better than “Superman Returns”? Maybe. But after all of the talk has settled and after another viewing, this movie is just more Hollywood drivel. It is a nice simple, fluffy movie that will entertain the family and that’s about it.

Johnny Depp was born to play this part. This time around I must say the so called gay characteristics of Jack Sparrow were a bit more obvious. I just recently read a story about the original movie and how Depp pulled from queer inspiration and Keith Richards speech technique to pin point the character. He truly is an actors actor, and the true meaning of a movie star. You can tell he loves this role, and that is pleasing to watch.

I was not a fan of the first “Pirates” movie, I thought it was just o.k. This movie is once again just o.k., but better than the first. In the grand scheme of the things this movie will be remembered for box office records. And surely those will be broken some day, “Spiderman 3″ anyone?

Johnny Depp As Jack Sparrow

I couldn’t tell you what the convoluted plot was about. This movie had no purpose other than to make more money for Disney. Luckily for us we get another installment of this movie coming soon…hooray! Honestly, they should have left things alone after the first movie was a fluke hit. Both of these movies have set box office records, and I am sure the next will do the same.

As for Orlando Bloom, Kiera Knightley and the other supporting characters…well they are just that, they’re there to support Depp…I mean Jack Sparrow…As usual my favorite supporting character is the special effects. In this movie Davie Jones and his crew are pretty neat to look at. They offer some pretty chilling and fun moments, the effects are out of this world and very realistic.

Kiera & Orlando

I love the comic touches in this movie, but they are fleeting. The plot goes on too long and the movie just makes you tired of the pirate antics after a while. It’s fun, and pretty to look at with lots of detail….but gets tiring. I do like the nods to the actual Disneyland “Pirates” ride. Yes, I have been on the ride that much to notice the re-enacted parts based on the mechanical pirates at Disneyland. I am still amazed a movie based on a ride has been doing so well. It says a lot about Depp’s acting magic that is for sure.
