DVD Review - “Nacho Libre”
GRADE: B
Jack Black is a genius, it is a known fact. He has a boyish charm and a great sense of comedic delivery. He loves to work, and it shows in his acting choices. Two of his last films “King Kong” and “School Of Rock” show his range. In “Nacho Libre” we get a silly, hilariously lovable character only Jack Black (who is not Mexican) could get away with. His energy working with kids is refreshing and quite sweet to see in an actor.
I liked Napoleon Dynamite, but it took many viewings to get the subtleties. This movie was written and Directed by Jared and Jarusha Hess, a married Mormon couple who also wrote and directed “Dynamite”. They have a great style and feel to their images, almost like a cartoon. Their comedy is dry and just as original as their sense of casting and dialogue. The visual comedy and site gags that are sprinkled through out “Nacho Libre” are very memorable and much like their other film.
I loved this movie, straight up. It made me laugh. It touched me in a schmaltzy way, and it was very sincere and cute. I loved the wrestling scenes, I loved Nacho’s partner Esquelito and Chancho the chubby kid from the orphanage.
I like the way the director casts regular people to play these over the top characters…this movie feels like it was made as a vehicle for Jack Black though. He does a bang up job with his over the top accent and flirtatious antics towards Sister Encarnacion. Hollywood comedy performances are always underrated, this one delivers on the laughs and style making it a kid classic in my eyes.
