DVD Review - “My Super Ex-Girlfriend”

by Keith

GRADE: C+

I am a much bigger fan of Luke Wilson’s than I am his brother, Owen. Luke is much cuter and way less annoying. He usually gives off a genuine charm and normal guy kind of feel in his roles. The same goes for this film. “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” tries to be hip and “neat” but just ends up being a light romantic comedy with some good moments. The concept for this film is ripe with great material, but the execution that director Ivan Reitman uses is dry and has a “been there, done that” quality to it.

Luke & Uma Find love

But for all of it’s gloss and polish and under wealming written dialog, “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” is cute enough to recommend for a cold winters night if you are on a date, or with family. It has some great special effects and Uma Thurman has never looked more gorgeous. Too bad the character of “G-Girl” is not very like-able. Her dark, obsessive moments were the most un-funny moments in the movie. You start to feel for Wilson’s charater, and if that is part of the joke it really isn’t that hilarious. It is at some points kind of uncomfortable, like watching a bad episode of the “Tyra Banks Show”.

Uma as G-Girl

I did love the scene with the great white shark and when G-Girl and Wilson have sex in mid-flight. Wilson with Thurman together as a couple was believable enough, but Uma comes off so annoying at first she doesn’t have that sexy edge she usually has. The flashback moments in the movie were also pretty funny and are a good set up for the ending of the movie.

Eddie Izzard as the villain “Professor Bedlam” is one of the freshest characters and has some of the funniest moments in the movie. I also loved Rain Wilson (from NBC’s “The Office”) as Wilson’s best friend. He is fast becoming one of the best character actors of TV and movies today. All of these bits add up to a cute movie with some serious flaws. I don’t feel right trashing the film, but cannot say it was one of the best movies I have seen all year. So if you get a chance put it on your Netflix list or pick it up at at the video store when you can’t find anything else for rainy day afternoon filler.
