DVD Review - “Miami Vice”
GRADE: D
I am not sure what I was expecting when I rented this movie. I thought, Michael Mann is cool and I like Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx so this couldn’t be half bad, right? Wrong, it is a complete mess. The whole thought of a “Miami Vice” movie now seems ridiculous, what were these people thinking?
The convoluted plot and fancy camera work are just two of the biggest problems. The next is ridiculously over the top, cliche action movie dialog. We get no character developement or rich story, just gritty shots of Miami and fast zooming trick cinematography. There wasn’t even enough action to keep me interested. The movie goes for sleek looks instead of fast paced storytelling.
The actors do a good enough job, but they just sink into the dark depressing settings and take a back seat to cookie cutter movie villains. And I have to say something about Colin Farrel’s hair, it drives me crazy in this movie, it’s just bad!
We get the same old scary gritty drug dealers and extras that we see in every other cop action film in this movie. There is no originality in the execution of this movie, all Michael Mann has is the gimmick of 80’s television show on his side. To be honest I didn’t care for the T.V. show that much either.
This movie isn’t terrible or un-watchable it is just slow and boring. The talent in “Miami Vice” is wasted on a bad plot and idea based on a cheesy 80’s T.V. show. If you want to see how an action movie should look, go see “Casino Royale”.
