DVD Review - “Barnyard”
GRADE: B-
This cartoon is hard to review. I was expecting an amateurish example of fart jokes and kiddie humor. Instead I was treated to a bizarre kaleidoscope of trippy images and adult jokes which at times was refreshing. To say the least I was surprised by the way this movie was visually assembled and how it aimed for the big kid demographic.
There are a few problems with this film. Number one, the voice talent sucks. There are not enough big names as far as I am concerned. I don’t like to wait for the credits of of animation movie to see who voiced who, it’s just a silly pet peeve of mine. Secondly, the marketing and promotions for this movie give it a pre-school little tots vibe that it doesn’t actually have. This movie is for tweens at the youngest I would say. And lastly, it had too many characters. I get it, farms have lots of animals but do we need to meet each one?
Of course you need to suspend disbelief in these kind of movies but there were so many plot holes, I couldn’t give this movie a rave review. Every weird inaccuracy had a reasoning behind it. And it got tiring to hear about a vegetarian farmer that loves animals, but has no clue they party at night. Seriously, one of the best lines was from the wife of a neighbor that proclaimed, “I have heard of those rave parties those people have”. Classic.
Mostly though this movie was stoner junk food and a silly and childish example of computer animation. It had some tender and awkward moments, it was all over the map. If I had to sum it up I would say it was “trippy”. It was bizarre enough for me to recommend it, but with caution. You may not get the subtle humor that is lost in the colorful Saturday morning cartoon animation.
