CD Review - John Mayer “Continuum”
GRADE: B+
John Mayer is hot, we ALL know that. But who would have guessed a few years ago he would be the soul single voice leading true bluesy rock n roll for the near future. This album is the most adult record he has put out yet.
John Mayer has a writing style that seems to come very easy for him. The bluesy guitar and horns on this album sound as if he tore them right out of a classic rock handbook, which is a good thing. His voice is even more husky and rich than in past efforts. I like this album a lot. I think John Mayer is one of those great artists that are fun to listen to when you are on a road trip and like to drive with the windows down. He is driving music at its best.
“Gravity” is a soothing, sweet melodic tune that is truly a standout. His lyrical style has always been fun and relatable. His melodies and vocal harmonies are just plain sexy.
“Stop This Train” lets us see Mayer’s country influences in this beautiful piano filled ballad. His voice can sound like Chris Martin at times, and I like that.
“Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” is one of the best break up songs to come out in a while. John is great at expressing his bitterness and pain. “Go cry about it don’t you”…is a skathing line and an all too common emotion in a bitter break up. He captures those feelings perfectly.
“Waiting For The World To Change” is classic Mayer and great for Pop radio. And if anyone is going to be brave enough to cover Jimmi Hendrix, why not John Mayer? This c.d. is full of surprises and great riffs and jamming. John Mayer fills that void between pop tart princesses and over played hi hop, he offers a healthy rock n roll rich alternative. The kind of rock that reminds you of bands and singers you grew up with. You get that comfort in Mayer’s voice, like he has been around forever.
