The Flaming Lips to Release Double Album in September

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009

Surrealist songs about robots, fans with a penchant for drug use, gigantic UFOs that shoot confetti — there’s no denying the Flaming Lips’ status as psychedelic rock titans. But now the Oklahoma band are taking the ultimate plunge in conceptual bombast by releasing their first-ever double album late this September.

“Somewhere along the way it occurred to me that we should do a double album,” Coyne told Billboard.com of their follow-up to 2006’s At War With The Mystics, tentatively called Embryonic. “Just this idea that you can kind of weave a couple of themes into there and you can sort of sprawl a little bit.”

The band — frontman Wayne Coyne, bassist Michael Ivins, and guitarist Steven Drozd — have written 13 tracks for the new release, and plan to pen eight to nine more in Drozd’s empty, unsold house, which the axeman put on market last summer. “People locally do know that we’re recording there,” Coyne told EW. “I’ve talked to quite a few musicians who have gone to an open-house day and looked around and said, ‘Oh, this is where they’re doing their new record.’”

flaminglips460

So how do the new songs sound?

Coyne said that one new track, called “Convinced of the Hex,” is like “Joy Division-meets-Miles Davis Group,” while “I Don’t Understand Karma” is his response to John Lennon’s “Instant Karma.”

“There was an element of accidentally stumbling upon more spontaneous sort of freak-out stuff,” Coyne said of the sessions. “We were sitting at Steven’s house and we just started out having these freak-out jam sessions where he’d play drums and I’d play bass and we just would sort of do freaky stuff. Some of those recordings, even though they’re not recorded very well, really had a spontaneity about them that we probably wouldn’t have purposely done.”

The Flaming Lips have a handful of gigs leading up to September’s All Tomorrow’s Parties concert, for which the band is picking the performers. Fans heading to the shows can expect new material. “We’re up for anything,” Coyne said.

Daft Punk to Score Disney’s “Tron” Sequel “TR2N”

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

daft_punk_disovery

French electronica duo Daft Punk has been signed to write the original music score for “Tron 2.0″ or “TR2N”, Walt Disney’s upcoming sequel to the groundbreaking 1982 animation cult hit. Daft Punk’s members (who’s real names are Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter, thanks Wikipedia!) have been involved in various films before, but “Tron 2.0″ will be their first complete feature film score.

tron

The film, scheduled for a 2011 release, is helmed by Joseph Kosinski and will star actors I have never heard of; Garrett Hedlund, Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett. According to news reports, the sequel will play as the “next chapter” after the first film.

As a fan of both the original “Tron” film and of all of Daft Punk’s work this news set my mind spinning. The one and only complaint is that I have to wait until 2011 to hear even a sample of this presumed masterpiece. I have to admit the idea of a “Tron” sequel did have me scratching my head, but this new addition to the mix has just brushed away any doubts that I may have had before, this film is going to kick major ass, especially if they release it in 3-D on IMAX!

Converse gives a nod to music and culture with their newest music sneaker collection. Look for them at Journeys. The music collection is to include designs for Grateful Dead, Black Sabbath, The Doors, The Who, Ozzy, and Pink Floyd. First up are Grateful Dead and Black Sabbath.

Converse Chuck Taylors are known as a favorite of rockers everywhere. This version pays tribute The Who. This shoe is an original canvas Chuck Taylor with a printed The Who logo on the tongue. The original Old School is still cool. Some things don’t change because they don’t need to. This All Star Hi-top features a canvas upper with music inspired Union Jack print for The Who.

The Coachella 2009 Line Up Announced!

Friday, January 30th, 2009

ch

FROM ROLLINGSTONE.COM

The organizers of the first big festival of 2009, California’s Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, have finally announced the lineup for their epic desert fest: Paul McCartney, the Killers and the Cure will headline on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, respectively (the fest runs April 17th, 18th and 19th at the Empire Polo Club in Indio). The date will mark the U.S. festival debut of Sir Paul, who says in a statement, “I have heard that Coachella is one of the greatest festivals in the world. I’m really excited to get out there and rock!” The April 17th lineup will also include Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Leonard Cohen, Franz Ferdinand and Morrissey (not the Smiths, as many had hoped). Joining the Killers on the April 18th are TV on the Radio and the return of Amy Winehouse.

Robert Smith and Co. are headlining on April 19th, but the real draw may be My Bloody Valentine, who will finally make their Coachella debut after being at the forefront of most booking rumors last year. Sunday night is ’80s Night at the Indio festival, with bands like X, Throbbing Gristle, Public Enemy and Paul Weller all performing. Plus, there will be sets from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Lupe Fiasco.

On the smaller stages, each day is dotted with top shelf indie acts, ranging from the Black Keys, Girl Talk and the Hold Steady on Friday to Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses and Liars on Saturday and Okkervil River, Antony & The Johnsons and No Age on Sunday. And that’s just naming a few.

If there’s one night that maybe looks weaker on paper, it’s probably the Saturday, April 18th lineup. Coachella had a cure to improve their slow-selling Saturday bill last year: adding Prince at the last minute. This year, there’s a star by the name of Bruce Springsteen who happens to be available during Coachella because of a six-day gap in his tour schedule that leaves him in Los Angeles with nothing to do starting on April 15th. Coincidence? We’ll find out soon.

Keep in mind, today’s announcement doesn’t include all those specialty dance tents that Coachella features. Britney Spears is among those rumored to be playing a dance tent in a move similar to Madonna’s appearance at the festival in 2006. Tickets for this year’s festival go on sale today at noon at the Coachella site, and interested buyers may want to take advantage of a layaway payment plan: today through February 28th, fans can pay 50 percent of the cost of a weekend pass now and the rest in either two installments or one final payment in March and April.

Britney Spears “Circus” Album Cover

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

“Circus” is the sixth studio album from pop tart Britney Spears. The album is set for release in the United States on December 2, 2008, in accordance with Spears’s 27th birthday. The first single, “Womanizer” is already a massive radio and singles sales hit. I for one am still suffering from Britney fatigue! At least this first single is catchy, but it gets stuck in your head and not in a good way. Is it me or does Spears look a lot like Jessica Simpson in this picture or what?

Black Sabbath are an English heavy metal band from Birmingham, England. Formed in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass), and Bill Ward (drums and percussion), the band has since experienced multiple lineup changes, with a total of twenty-two former members. Originally formed as a heavy blues-rock band named Earth, the band began incorporating occult- and horror-inspired lyrics with tuned-down guitars, changing their name to Black Sabbath and releasing multiple gold and platinum records in the 1970s.

As one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, Black Sabbath helped define the genre with releases such as 1970’s quadruple-platinum Paranoid. Black Sabbath has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, and were ranked number one on MTV’s Greatest Metal Bands countdown.

As many of you already know Converse is an American shoe company that has been making shoes since the early 20th century. Chuck Taylor Converse shoes have been around for over 90 years and I can distinctly remember buying my first pair of blue ones when I was 12. Coincidentally this was the year I first heard my older brother playing Sabbath. He wore only black Converse…of course. So it is a match made in heaven that the two have joined forces.

As part of their music series this year, Converse releases a collection of Black Sabbath shoes with a kick ass logo and tongue with the band’s name on it. I posted a few Ozzy and Black Sabbath inspired music videos below to help promote the new line shoes sold at Journey’s retail stores, they are that cool.

Journey’s Shoe Retailer and Converse Shoes have teamed up to create a new line of shoes inspired by some of the best classic rock bands ever! Below is a short story written by Pop Culture Buzz fan Claudia Pierce describing the rock n’ roll marriage of the classic Converse shoe and some of the best music ever recorded!

“ODE TO CONVERSE” BY CLAUDIA PIERCE

It just so happens that “Classic Rock” and Converse sneakers came into my life on the same day. In retrospect, it’s hard to say whether the shoes started me on a new path of tastes, or if the two just happened to collide into a fabulous, ‘oops-i-tripped-and-dunked-my-chocolate-in-your-peanut-butter’-esque, accidental discovery of two random objects that are surprisingly complementary. Either way, it felt rather serendipitous and both the shoes and the music have stayed with me ever since.

I was 10 years old. It was my last week of summer and my mom had taken me school shopping at the local mall. It was then that I saw them in the window –high-top, black, Converse Chuck Taylor basketball shoes. I’d seen them before, but these were different. These were black on the outside, and hot pink on the inside. They were made a little higher so that you could flip the high-top part down and have hot pink ankles over black shoes. They were the coolest things I’d ever seen, and as I suctioned myself to the shoe store window staring in at them, I was certain that I would be transformed into someone equally cool if I could just have them. I begged my mother into buying them for me. Keep in mind that this was a hard sell -we had come looking for pants. She didn’t want to hear about anything but pants. She was in affordable, practical pants mode and had pants on the brain. I managed to briefly turn her attention to the shoes, but then it became a matter of convincing her that I needed shoes just as badly as these pants she was harping on. That didn’t work, so I had to resort to negotiating. Promising more than I could ever give, in a style reserved for election year politicians and a coveting child, I swore away half of my youth in chores to get those shoes. THEN I had to vow to keep them clean if she please, please, PLEASE let me wear them out of the store. She did. In that singular moment, strutting out of the Kinney’s in my Converse flipdown high tops, I was cooler beyond my wildest dreams.

While watching tv later that same afternoon, a commercial came on for some record collection. It was one of those deals where they have a huge mix of some genre on an 8-record package and you could order now and have rush delivery to start listening right away! Being that I’d spent half of my summer in front of the television, I had seen this commercial many times over. I had learned to block it out and it became the background of my daily life. However, this day was different. I was sitting back, taking the opportunity to admire my shoes during the commercial break, and that’s when I heard the television emit a soulful croon. What was that voice? It was so smooth, and cool, and laid back, and bluesy. I looked up from my shoes and saw that it was the ad for some classic rock hits collection. According to the highlighted name scrolling across the screen, I was listening to a 20-second clip of a ‘greatest hit’ by some band called “the Doors”. I’d seen this same ad all summer long, but for the first time ever, I heard the songs that day. I was blocking it out as few as 24 hours earlier, but now, in my black and pink flip-down converse, I suddenly got it.

Somewhat possessed, swept up in the moment and in my discovery, I jumped to my feet and started dancing to the music. Feeling especially ‘rock and roll’, and looking for any opportunity to showcase my shoes, I put one foot up on the coffee table, rock star style, and began playing air guitar while Jim crooned about waking up this morning and getting himself a beer. I didn’t know who these doors people were, but the funky organ and guitar with a soulful mating call of the siren Morrison layered over it was almost more than I could bear in that moment. I wanted to know them. I wanted to be him. I wanted to listen to this music endlessly, while dancing to it in the only shoes hip enough to warrant doing so -my brand new Converse. I recall thinking that they should stop being marketed as ‘basketball shoes’, as they would be better categorized as “jumping-off-your-bed-like-a-flippin’-rock-star” shoes. I made a mental note that I would write the company someday and inform them of this, when I was older, of course, and stood a better chance of having my idea taken seriously –but I digress… Though I wasn’t certain how, I felt that there was a connection here. I felt as though I had discovered a portal to another dimension in the simple combination of rubber-soled, canvas shoes and hippy rock of the 60s and 70s. I attempted to share this information with my family, and with my friends, but no one seemed to get it. All the same, I knew that I had seen the light in some way. I had felt something that could not be un-felt. I had a new love and appreciation for this music, this era, these shoes; I was forever changed.

Thus started the trend. I eventually reached a point where I was buying my own converse in a variety of styles and colors, and I was listening to my own copy of Morrison Hotel. As time went on, my tastes in footwear and music broadened, but Converse shoes and Classic Rock were the only two things in this world that seemingly never went out of style. Besides, it didn’t matter what band I listened to –the Doors, Pink Floyd, Ozzy or the Dead –the timeless quality of the shoes went right along with it and made me feel like more of a rock star. Jamming out in my bedroom, shaking ass at a show, or throwing elbows in a pit, my Converse fit right in and have always served me well. They’re undeniably comfortable, they go with any article of clothing, and even at their worst; grubby, full of holes, and holding on by two threads after being worn for 4 ½ years straight, something about them gives you the feeling that they look exactly as they are meant to at that particular time. And if that’s not the epitome of rock and roll, I am not sure what is….

The Flaming Lips Record a Christmas Song!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I am one of the biggest Flaming Lips fans I know. I have seen their live act 4 times and was even picked from the crowd to dance on stage as they performed a couple of years ago (see the picture below). So the news I have posted from Entertainment Weekly.com below has me more excited than a 10 year old on Christmas morning!

Any news concerning these guys is exciting obviously, but the “Christmas on Mars” project has been many years in the making so to see it finally finished and ready for public consumption is a welcomed relief. I just hope with the news of this holiday project we will soon hear that the band will be releasing new material and tour dates, a super fan can only wish!

Me (dressed in an inflatable Santa suit) with The Flaming Lips & Gnarls Barkley on New Years Eve 2007 @ The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, S.F. CA

The Flaming Lips have just recorded a version of festive favorite “Silent Night.” The track is a musical extension of the band’s recently completed film, “Christmas On Mars”. Of course, traditionally, movie-related music is recorded in time to actually be included in the movie. Then again, the Lips have never been the most traditional of acts.

“Christmas On Mars has, in a sense, some Christmas music in it,” says frontman Wayne Coyne. “But it doesn’t really have a song that we sing per se. So we were doing a song that will be released on iTunes later in the year. I call it panic marketing: You finish and then you go, ‘Oh f—! Now I know what to do!’ ”

Spookily, Coyne reveals that their version of “Silent Night” was influenced in part by the work of Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, who died on September 15, shortly after the band left the studio.

“It does have some Rick Wright-ish flourishes” says Coyne. “I think we were listening to ‘Great Gig In The Sky,’ which is one of his big moments. There are subtle, cool shadings going on in there. We talked quite a bit about Rick Wright just over the weekend. It was sort of uncanny.” Coyne also reveals that he hopes to have another Lips album out next June. “The things we’ve been working on are like John Lennon meets Miles Davis and they discover some supercomputer from the future,” he explains. “Those are the references we keep coming back to.”

Christmas On Mars will receive a limited theatrical release this fall and then be available on DVD from November 11.

The New Lily Allen Single “Guess Who Batman (F**k You Very Much)” Is Sassy & Hot!

Wednesday, September 3rd, 2008

I loved Lily Allen’s debut 2007 CD “Alright Still” so this follow up single to that world wide smash is eagerly anticipated. I am a huge fan despite all of her tabloid drama. I have seen her perform live and even though she was a mess I loved every bit of her raunchy and witty pop music. The YouTube streaming single below is point in case, Lily Allen doesn’t give a shit about her critics and it works!

A New Kids On The Block Reunion?

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008

nkotb.jpg

Joey McIntyre, Jonathan Knight, Donnie Wahlberg, Jordan Knight, and Danny Wood broke up the New Kids On The Block back in 1994, and have since experienced varying degrees of success in film, music, and reality TV. Until this week, they have coyly denied that an NKTOB reunion was defintiely in the works.

Although no longer “kids,” per se (the youngest member, McIntyre, is now 35), they are expected to make their official New Kids reunion tour announcement this Friday, April 4, on NBC’s The Today Show.

I am a bit embarrassed to say I was a big NKOTB fan and am kind of excited to hear this news. I have to say all the boys have grown up to be quite handsome. I’d love to hear how many of you readers are excited to hear this news, c’mon you know you loved “The Rigth Stuff.”

Listen to 3 New Madonna Songs; “4 Minutes to Save The World”, “The Beat Goes On” & “Candy Shop” Here!

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

madonna.jpg

“Hard Candy” is Madonna’s eleventh studio album and it will be released towards the end of April 2008 by Warner Bros. Records. It will be the last of Madonna’s studio albums to be released under her contract with Warner Bros. (a compilation to be released in late 2008 or early 2009 will complete the contract).

On March 24, 2008 the first single “4 Minutes”, featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, will be released but you can hear it here along with 2 other singles off of “Hard Candy” titled “The Beat Goes On” and “Candy Shop” (featuring Pharrell). I also have posted a picture of the supposed cover art for “Hard Candy” along with a shot of the album art work below the music player. Enjoy Madge fans!

Madonna’s New CD “Hard Candy” Track Listing & Release Date

Wednesday, March 5th, 2008

madonna.jpg

Madonna’s highly-awaited new album will be called “Hard Candy,” the singer’s publicist has confirmed, and it will be her last on the Warner label. The CD, which is the follow up to 2005’s “Confessions On A Dance Floor,” will be released on 29 April, 2008.

Before “Hard Candy’s” release (which will be Madonna’s 11th studio album) Madge will bring out the single “4 Minutes” featuring Justin Timberlake, at the end of March. The album will have an urban feel, with hip hop stars Timbaland, Pharrell Williams of the Neptunes and Nate “Danja” Hills producing several of the tracks.

Announcing “Hard Candy,” Madonna said: “The title is a juxtaposition of tough and sweetness, kind of like I’m gonna kick your ass but it’s going to make you feel good. And of course, I love candy.” The music on “Hard Candy” is described as “very up-tempo, upbeat and urban—it’s a Virginia-based sound.”

Last year Madonna announced she had signed a $120-million deal with US concert promoter Live Nation. After “Hard Candy” is released Madonna begins a wide-ranging 10-year recording, touring and merchandising deal with Artist Nation, a new initiative launched by concert promoter Live Nation. But Warner Bros. still has rights to also release a hits collection as part of her contract.

If you are a rabid Madonna fan like me and millions of others, then you can hardly wait to hear J.T. and Madge’s new single. Just think of all the awesome dance-floor ready “gay remixes” she can come up with! My little pop whore mind can hardly contain the excitement. Once again Madonna has proven to be an innovator and pop star diva!

The Coachella Line Up Announced!

Tuesday, January 22nd, 2008

I plan on going to at least the Saturday and Sunday Coachella shows this April and I will review each act on this site. I am in love with Mark Ronson, Calvin Harris, My Morning Jacket, Dimitri From Paris, Simian Mobile Disco and have been waiting to see them forever!

Even though this set list is not as magical as years past, maybe it will just be more mellow and less hectic. Nothing will compare to the Daft punk/Madonna year though, nothing! Check out the list below and let me know what you think!
