“Barbarella” Re-Make In The Works
The movie “Barbarella” with a young, fresh, hot Jane Fonda is a camp classic. This movie borders on soft core porn and has some cheesy ass special effects. This movie holds a special place in my heart as it has been a theme at a Burning Man camp with a close group of friends for two years. If you have seen the film you can guess why a bunch of gays would come up with the over top theme. Forget the bad acting and crappy set designs you have got to love the costumes and Fonda in her first screen role.
Last week we learned that Dino De Laurentiis was hot to produce a new-fangled “female James Bond in outer space” remake of “Barbarella,” but it’s not exactly a remake, of course. And now it seems that the veteran producer has scored himself a director. This is good news for sci-fi cult movie geeks around the world.
Peter Webber, who went from arthouse (”Girl with a Pearl Earring”) to the slaughter house (with next week’s “Hannibal Rising”) will step in and helm the new version of “Barbarella.” The original starred a very young (and rather curvy) Jane Fonda as a trouble-thwarting space-babe. It was rumored once that Drew Barrymore was interested in this project, but that would be a huge mistake. I like the idea of a new girl playing the role. We’ll see!
