The “Angels & Demons” (from Dan Brown of “The Da Vinci Code”) Movie Trailer is Here!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

“Angels & Demons” is the upcoming film adaptation of Dan Brown’s novel of the same name, due for release on May 15, 2009. The film stars Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, a role he played in “The Da Vinci Code”, another Brown film adaptation. “The Da Vinci Code” director Ron Howard and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman also return. Filming took place in Rome and the Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles.

The premise follows Robert Langdon who is summoned by CERN to investigate a murder victim, branded with the Illuminati ambigram, leading him to discover the cult’s scheme to murder four cardinals and destroy St. Peter’s Basilica during a papal conclave using antimatter.

This sounds more convoluted than the first film/book which could be a fun ride. The best part of this film is that Tom Hanks got rid of his terrible hair-do from the first movie. That cut will go down as one of the most distracting and awful hair cuts in film history.

The New “Friday the 13th” Remake Teaser Trailer Is Creepy!

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

“Friday the 13th” is a 2009 remake of the classic horror film directed by Marcus Nispel, and written by Damian Shannon and Mark Swift. It is a reboot of the “Friday the 13th” film series, whose last film was the 2003 crossover film “Freddy vs. Jason”.

Nispel also helmed the 2003 remake of Tobe Hooper’s “The Texas Chain Saw Massacre”, while Shannon and Swift wrote the screenplay for “Freddy vs. Jason”. The film stars Derek Mears as Jason Voorhees, with Jared Padalecki and Amanda Righetti portraying the male and female leads, respectively. Set for a Friday, February 13, 2009 release, the film will take “elements from all three [of the first] movies”.

I am very interested to see how this movie will work by combining the first three films of the series into one. I am a huge fan of old 80’s slasher movies and this film is the grand daddy of them all. I hope this film has enough boob shots and gross out gore to be considered a classic like the iconic original. Just the thought of the theme music still gives me creeps!

Black Sabbath are an English heavy metal band from Birmingham, England. Formed in 1968 by Ozzy Osbourne (lead vocals), Tony Iommi (guitar), Geezer Butler (bass), and Bill Ward (drums and percussion), the band has since experienced multiple lineup changes, with a total of twenty-two former members. Originally formed as a heavy blues-rock band named Earth, the band began incorporating occult- and horror-inspired lyrics with tuned-down guitars, changing their name to Black Sabbath and releasing multiple gold and platinum records in the 1970s.

As one of the most influential heavy metal bands of all time, Black Sabbath helped define the genre with releases such as 1970’s quadruple-platinum Paranoid. Black Sabbath has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, and were ranked number one on MTV’s Greatest Metal Bands countdown.

As many of you already know Converse is an American shoe company that has been making shoes since the early 20th century. Chuck Taylor Converse shoes have been around for over 90 years and I can distinctly remember buying my first pair of blue ones when I was 12. Coincidentally this was the year I first heard my older brother playing Sabbath. He wore only black Converse…of course. So it is a match made in heaven that the two have joined forces.

As part of their music series this year, Converse releases a collection of Black Sabbath shoes with a kick ass logo and tongue with the band’s name on it. I posted a few Ozzy and Black Sabbath inspired music videos below to help promote the new line shoes sold at Journey’s retail stores, they are that cool.

Movie Review - “W”

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

** 1/2 STARS

Oliver Stone’s new film “W” isn’t as scathing and controversial as the trailers and the media would lead you to believe. I was preparing myself to watch a completely liberal and one sided depiction of the worst President in history, but in the end this film is nothing more than just another glossy Hollywood bio-pic like “Ray”. If you go into this movie thinking you will get more insight into who George W. Bush is and why he does what he does, then you will be disappointed, there is nothing new to see here.

The uncanny performances in this movie are the main reasons why you should go see it while it is still in theaters. Josh Brolin gives an out of this world Oscar worthy performance as George Bush Jr. Richard Dreyfuss (Cheney) and James Cromwell (George Bush Sr.) also give spot on performances that are pretty dead on. The supporting cast which includes Thandie Newton (Condoleezza Rice) and Elizabeth Banks (Laura Bush) are mesmerizing on screen. These performances are more than impressions; they are heavily nuanced depictions that are eerily real to life.

As entertaining as “W” was I couldn’t help but get the feeling that the movie was rushed through production and slapped together so it could be released before the elections. Some of the make-up and hair in this film comes off a bit amateurish for a big Hollywood film. The truly only gratifying moments in this movie come from watching all of these talented actors working with each other. The scenes in the war room are the most intense and entertaining parts of “W”, everything else can be filed under “made for TV” content.

More than anything this movie made me sad. Realizing that any buffoon with a privileged background could become President made me sick to my stomach and I just felt depressed after the film ended. Once the movie was over I did feel a sense of great relief knowing that George W. Bush will be gone as of next year. The saddest realization is knowing that this is a part of our history that we have to get used to whether we like it or not. And for that point alone this film documents one the worst times in modern American perfectly.

The Swedish Vampire Horror Movie “Let the Right One In” is Freaky and Scary as Hell!

Monday, October 20th, 2008

“Let the Right One In” is a 2008 Swedish romantic horror film directed by Tomas Alfredson. The film is based on the novel of the same name by John Ajvide Lindqvist and tells the story of a 12-year-old boy’s friendship with a vampire girl. Even before “Let the Right One In” was given a release date in the US, “Cloverfield” director Matt Reeves had signed to write and direct an English language remake for Overture Films.

“Let the Right One” In has received almost universal critical acclaim. The film currently has a 100% “fresh” rating at Rotten Tomatoes based on 11 reviews. Reviewers have commented on the beautiful cinematography and its quiet, restrained approach to the sometimes bloody and violent subject matter. This sounds like the kind of film that is made just for me!

DVD Review - “You Don’t Mess With The Zohan”

Monday, October 20th, 2008

GRADE: B-

In general I usually don’t like Adam Sandler films. I can honestly say that only two of his films have really won me over after watching them and they are “30 First Dates” and “The Wedding Singer”. I was surprised to find “Zohan” not as crass and grating as “The Waterboy” or as annoyingly stupid as “Little Nicky”. “Don’t Mess with the Zohan” turned out to be a pretty decent movie rental. I’ve even shocked myself by giving it a mild recommendation.

The brainless plot is 100% ridiculous and over the top, but Sandler seems to thrive in these bizarre stereotypical characters. Sandler plays an Israeli spy who is desperate to live out his dream of becoming a hairstylist in America. The rest of the plot follows him as he adapts to American society while trying not to blow his cover. When he is discovered by a terrorist cell the mayhem begins culminating in a far fetched and gut busting ending that is not for the easily offended.

“Don’t Mess with the Zohan” is immature and it has it’s moments of pure absurdity, but it does have some truly funny moments too. There is no way I would ever go pay $10 for an Adam Sandler film on opening night, which is why I am surprised this film won me over. Sure there are too many big dick jokes and way too many scenes of “Zohan” screwing old ladies, but it all kind works in a zany way. Mariah Carey even gets a few laughs in her hilarious cameo. I wouldn’t recommend this film to people who hate childish humor and fart gags. This movie is brainless entertainment that is perfect for lazy weekends.

Movie Review - “Religulous”

Friday, October 17th, 2008

**** STARS

No religion is safe from the sharp wit of Bill Maher in this comic look at organized belief systems around the world. This controversial documentary is directed by Larry Charles, who previously made both fans and foes with “Borat”. According to Maher, the title of the film is a portmanteau derived from the words “religion” and “ridiculous”.

This film proves that the power of laughter can always make the worst of topics bearable. Maher comes off as a smart, effective and scathing interviewer as he asks questions about religion that any child would, without crossing the lines of disrespect. Most religious conservatives will consider this a punch in the eye to their beliefs until of course he starts picking apart another set of beliefs that are far removed from their own.

The deafening hypocrisy and gut wrenching truths that Maher is able to drudge up is infuriating and at times so ridiculous you can’t help but laugh out loud. If anything this film is sincere and even handed. Every type of religion and the mythology behind their beliefs is scrutinized and picked apart in “Religulous”. This includes Mormons, Scientology, Catholics, Muslims, Christians and more.

The last few reels of this film take a sudden and harsh turn as the tone changes from educational, though provoking and funny to down right scary. The alarming message of “Religulous” may make you laugh and frighten you at the same time but the true meaning will resonate long after viewing this film in the theater. If I had my way I would make this required viewing in High School. If this movie doesn’t get an Oscar nomination for Best Documentary then it will be a complete and utter shame!

“Black Ice” is the upcoming fifteenth studio album by Australian hard rock band AC/DC, set to be released on October 20, 2008. It will be their first album in eight years, since the release of “Stiff Upper Lip” in 2000, the longest gap between AC/DC’s studio albums to date. The album was produced by Brendan O’Brien.

I have always loved AC/DC’s hard driving brand of rock ‘n roll since I was a little boy. Even though their new stuff cannot compare to the classics we all have come to love, these guys can still keep churnning out powerful rock tunes. Currently AC/DC are playing a massive arena tour across the USA and other dates across the world this winter and into next year. Watch the new music video titled “Rock n Roll Train” below.

Movie Review - “Quarantine”

Thursday, October 16th, 2008

*** STARS

This year hasn’t been a great year for gory horror films. Earlier this summer “The Strangers” scared the shit out movie fans including me. It instantly became the only horror movie this year to make any money and to be considered a hit. That was until the stomach churning, heart pounding gore-fest titled “Quarantine” came out this past weekend. This movie grabs a hold of you by the jugular and doesn’t let go until the last few creepy frames of the film.

The movie opens with reporter Angela Vidal (Jennifer Carpenter) and her cameraman Scott (Steve Harris) doing a report on the night shift of a Los Angeles fire station. Angela and Scott ride along with firefighters Fletcher (Johnathon Schaech) and Jake (Jay Hernandez) who are called to an apartment building where people are suddenly getting sick. That is when the non-stop horror and bone chilling scares really kick in.

Without giving away any major details I can say that this film is a hybrid of “Night of the Living Dead” and “Outbreak”, but much more bloodier and graphic. This film is not for the weak at heart or for those people that are easily grossed out. This movie was made for fans of unadulterated over the top carnage and b-movie violence. It delivers the goods when it comes to real chills and scares.

Some of the acting and dialogue may come off a bit campy but the films energy and shaky camera work give this movie a real horrific feel. Just like many other great horror films this movie is able to slip in some humor in all the right places without making the film come of ridiculous and cheesy. The simple plot and fast paced action made this film a creepy and jolting ride. If you are looking for a scary movie to see this Halloween and you don’t have a weak stomach then go see this nasty little gem soon!

FALL MUSIC PREVIEW: Jem - “Down to Earth”, Robin Thicke “Something Else”, Jennifer Hudson “Jennifer Hudson”, Of Montreal “Skeletal Lamping” & Jenny Lewis - “Acid Tongue”

Monday, October 13th, 2008

JEM - “DOWN TO EARTH”

GRADE: C

Jem’s debut album “Finally Woken” was a huge surprise when it was released in 2004. Back then Jem’s upbeat tunes and electro grooves set her apart from sounding too much like Dido. Unfortunately Jem’s down tempo follow up CD “Down to Earth” suffers from the sophomore curse and the disc in the end sounds a bit mediocre and dated. The first single “It’s Amazing” is a cheesy adult contemporary ballad that is too radio friendly and it almost puts you to sleep.

The few bright spots on the album are perky and uplifting, but once again it’s hard to differentiate her from Dido at times. It’s almost as if Jem decided to flaunt her Christian faith which makes the album’s lyrics coem off as heavy handed and pretentious at times, like in the sore thumb of a track titled “Aciid”. I hate when pop star become preachy and there are just too many references to praying, heaven, god and the after life on this CD for me to really love it.

I truly love Jem as an artist and I hope that in some way she can salvage this disc with some decent remix dance tracks. The mix of gospel choir, banjos, synthesizer beats and ethereal sound-scapes bog down the production of “Down to Earth”. Luckily there are a couple of hidden “gems” on this let down of a follow up from Jem, but not enough for me to rave about it like I did her first disc.

MUST HEAR SONGS: “ON TOP OF THE WORLD”, “I WANT YOU”, “KEEP ON WALKING”

ROBIN THICKE - “SOMETHING ELSE”

GRADE: A

If you discount Robin Thicke just because he is a white R&B singer, the son of Alan Thicke or because he sings in a falsetto then you are missing out on one of the freshest most funky new artists to come out in ages. Blending a mix of disco, soul and R&B Thicke manages to make you swoon, shake your booty and set the mood for romance all in one song. I think he has the best falsetto in pop music, even better than Justin Timberlake’s!

His first single “Magic” itself is one of the year’s best songs and even better his “remix” with Mary J. Blige is a pop fans wet dream. This CD is easily this year’s most romantic album, even the dance themed songs peppered through out “Something Else” ooze sexuality. “Side Step” is a refreshing throw back to the 70’s as is the sweet and soulful title track.

When it comes to the slow jams like “The Sweetest Love” Thicke lays it on thick in a good way. His lyrics can be sweet, dark and erotic making the pulsing grooves even dirtier. The one track where Thicke gets a bit carried away is the self indulgent song “Dreamworld’. But every other song on this disc is soaked in sexy guitar hooks and Jimi Hendrix inspired smoky riffs. Any fan of hot and funky R&B music should own this CD, period!

MUST HEAR SONGS: “SIDESTEP”, “MAGIC”, “SHADOW OF DOUBT”, “LOVERMAN”, “YOU’RE MY BABY”, “SOMETHING ELSE”

JENNIFER HUDSON - “JENNIFER HUDSON”

GRADE: B+

Jennifer Hudson is under a lot of pressure to deliver a great album after her Oscar win over two years ago. Thankfully all the time in the studio tweaking away with multiple producers on her new album was worth it. Jennifer Hudson has worked with the right people on this album. Her pairing with Ludacris and Timbaland in “Pocketbook” is a powerful pop song with a delicious hook. I predict that over time this album will produce multiple hits.

If you are not a fan of hip-hop or modern R&B then this is not your cup of tea. A lot the ballads have an old school sound and early 90’s vibe. Hudson and T-Pain make a great duet team on the radio ready slow jam “What’s Wrong (Go Away)”. Hudson is best singing sassy attitude layered classic R&B inspired songs like “I’m His Only Woman” (which she sings with American Idol winner Fantasia).

Hudson isn’t breaking new ground with her debut, but at the same time the music scene needs a great R&B/Hip-Hop album filled with hits that will bring the strength and passion back to the genre. Hudson has such a powerful and strong presence when she sings it is hard not to be blown away listening to her brand new disc, check it out!

MUST HEAR SONGS: “SPOTLIGHT”, “MY HEART”, “I’M HIS ONLY WOMAN”, “POCKETBOOK”

OF MONTREAL - “SKELETAL LAMPING”

GRADE: A

Of Montreal may have some real catchy songs but most of their records are masterfully constructed electronic orchestras of mayhem. The group produces music that is spliced up and choppy at times, comprised of multiple melodies and harmonies that abruptly start and then begin to suddenly evolve into strange muliti-layered tracks. By mixing artsy beats and odd soaring vocals Of Montreal is able to create bizarre masterpieces.

An example of how Of Montreal can tap into that perfect mix of catchy music and weird gorgeous harmonies is on one of “Skeletal Lamping’s” best songs, the sex drenched track “St. Exquisite’s Confessions”. I still can’t make sense of most of the lyrics on this or any Of Montreal CD’s but I love trying to. The ambiguous nature of the songs, eclectic use of noise and instruments and the creative production make this CD a truly weird experience.

This CD has to be heard to be believed. Most mainstream music fans will not like the innovative and new sounds that Of Montreal creates which is understandable, they are an acquired taste. Songs like “For Our Elegant Caste” sound as if you are taking a ride on a trippy carousel in a strange psychedelic universe. If you like having your definition of music pushed to new levels then you need to hear Of Montreal’s new CD.

MUST HEAR SONGS: “FOR OUR ELEGANT CASTE”, “ST. EXUISITES CONFESSIONS”, “GALLERY PIECE”, “ID ENGAGER”, “WICKED WISDOM”

JENNY LEWIS - “ACID TONGUE”

GRADE: A

Jenny Lewis in many ways has a traditional singing voice that could have easily gotten lost in the adult contemporary landscape. Even in her darkest songs her sweet and tender voice perk you up and lift your spirits as is proof on “Acid Tongue’s” most inspirational song “Sing a Son for Them”. Last year her band “Rilo Kiley” put out a Southern California pop rock classic chock full of instantly catchy tunes.

This CD is primarily one of this year’s best albums because of its simplicity and gorgeous construction. Songs like “Godspeed” and “Carpetbaggers” (which she sings with Elvis Costello) use a twangy country influence to create a sound ready for both pop and country radio. Lewis’ eclectic taste and talent for crafting perfectly written stories set to fun melodies has allowed her to become one of rock n’ rolls biggest talents.

Lewis has a lot of interesting and fun stories to tell. It only makes her art near perfect that she can create music that sounds familiar but new and fresh at the same time. Her haunting and innocent voice soothes the soul. This album is perfect for driving on road trips and for haning out with your stoner friends (just listen to “See Fernando” for an example). If you get excited introducing your friends to new music and if you tend to overplay albums that contain great songs from beginning to end, then you need to hear “Acid Tongue”.

MUST HEAR SONGS: “BAD MAN’S WORLD”, “SEE FERNANDO”, “PRETTY BIRD”, “ACID TONGUE”, “BLACK SAND”, “JACK KILLED MOON”, “TRYING MY BEST TO LOVE YOU”

“ODE TO CONVERSE” BY CLAUDIA PIERCE

It just so happens that “Classic Rock” and Converse sneakers came into my life on the same day. In retrospect, it’s hard to say whether the shoes started me on a new path of tastes, or if the two just happened to collide into a fabulous, ‘oops-i-tripped-and-dunked-my-chocolate-in-your-peanut-butter’-esque, accidental discovery of two random objects that are surprisingly complementary. Either way, it felt rather serendipitous and both the shoes and the music have stayed with me ever since.

I was 10 years old. It was my last week of summer and my mom had taken me school shopping at the local mall. It was then that I saw them in the window –high-top, black, Converse Chuck Taylor basketball shoes. I’d seen them before, but these were different. These were black on the outside, and hot pink on the inside. They were made a little higher so that you could flip the high-top part down and have hot pink ankles over black shoes. They were the coolest things I’d ever seen, and as I suctioned myself to the shoe store window staring in at them, I was certain that I would be transformed into someone equally cool if I could just have them. I begged my mother into buying them for me. Keep in mind that this was a hard sell -we had come looking for pants. She didn’t want to hear about anything but pants. She was in affordable, practical pants mode and had pants on the brain. I managed to briefly turn her attention to the shoes, but then it became a matter of convincing her that I needed shoes just as badly as these pants she was harping on. That didn’t work, so I had to resort to negotiating. Promising more than I could ever give, in a style reserved for election year politicians and a coveting child, I swore away half of my youth in chores to get those shoes. THEN I had to vow to keep them clean if she please, please, PLEASE let me wear them out of the store. She did. In that singular moment, strutting out of the Kinney’s in my Converse flipdown high tops, I was cooler beyond my wildest dreams.

While watching tv later that same afternoon, a commercial came on for some record collection. It was one of those deals where they have a huge mix of some genre on an 8-record package and you could order now and have rush delivery to start listening right away! Being that I’d spent half of my summer in front of the television, I had seen this commercial many times over. I had learned to block it out and it became the background of my daily life. However, this day was different. I was sitting back, taking the opportunity to admire my shoes during the commercial break, and that’s when I heard the television emit a soulful croon. What was that voice? It was so smooth, and cool, and laid back, and bluesy. I looked up from my shoes and saw that it was the ad for some classic rock hits collection. According to the highlighted name scrolling across the screen, I was listening to a 20-second clip of a ‘greatest hit’ by some band called “the Doors”. I’d seen this same ad all summer long, but for the first time ever, I heard the songs that day. I was blocking it out as few as 24 hours earlier, but now, in my black and pink flip-down converse, I suddenly got it.

Somewhat possessed, swept up in the moment and in my discovery, I jumped to my feet and started dancing to the music. Feeling especially ‘rock and roll’, and looking for any opportunity to showcase my shoes, I put one foot up on the coffee table, rock star style, and began playing air guitar while Jim crooned about waking up this morning and getting himself a beer. I didn’t know who these doors people were, but the funky organ and guitar with a soulful mating call of the siren Morrison layered over it was almost more than I could bear in that moment. I wanted to know them. I wanted to be him. I wanted to listen to this music endlessly, while dancing to it in the only shoes hip enough to warrant doing so -my brand new Converse. I recall thinking that they should stop being marketed as ‘basketball shoes’, as they would be better categorized as “jumping-off-your-bed-like-a-flippin’-rock-star” shoes. I made a mental note that I would write the company someday and inform them of this, when I was older, of course, and stood a better chance of having my idea taken seriously –but I digress… Though I wasn’t certain how, I felt that there was a connection here. I felt as though I had discovered a portal to another dimension in the simple combination of rubber-soled, canvas shoes and hippy rock of the 60s and 70s. I attempted to share this information with my family, and with my friends, but no one seemed to get it. All the same, I knew that I had seen the light in some way.
