The Flaming Lips Record a Christmas Song!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I am one of the biggest Flaming Lips fans I know. I have seen their live act 4 times and was even picked from the crowd to dance on stage as they performed a couple of years ago (see the picture below). So the news I have posted from Entertainment Weekly.com below has me more excited than a 10 year old on Christmas morning!

Any news concerning these guys is exciting obviously, but the “Christmas on Mars” project has been many years in the making so to see it finally finished and ready for public consumption is a welcomed relief. I just hope with the news of this holiday project we will soon hear that the band will be releasing new material and tour dates, a super fan can only wish!

The Flaming Lips have just recorded a version of festive favorite “Silent Night.” The track is a musical extension of the band’s recently completed film, “Christmas On Mars”. Of course, traditionally, movie-related music is recorded in time to actually be included in the movie. Then again, the Lips have never been the most traditional of acts.

“Christmas On Mars has, in a sense, some Christmas music in it,” says frontman Wayne Coyne. “But it doesn’t really have a song that we sing per se. So we were doing a song that will be released on iTunes later in the year. I call it panic marketing: You finish and then you go, ‘Oh f—! Now I know what to do!’ ”

Spookily, Coyne reveals that their version of “Silent Night” was influenced in part by the work of Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, who died on September 15, shortly after the band left the studio.

“It does have some Rick Wright-ish flourishes” says Coyne. “I think we were listening to ‘Great Gig In The Sky,’ which is one of his big moments. There are subtle, cool shadings going on in there. We talked quite a bit about Rick Wright just over the weekend. It was sort of uncanny.” Coyne also reveals that he hopes to have another Lips album out next June. “The things we’ve been working on are like John Lennon meets Miles Davis and they discover some supercomputer from the future,” he explains. “Those are the references we keep coming back to.”

Christmas On Mars will receive a limited theatrical release this fall and then be available on DVD from November 11.

The “Valkyrie” Movie Trailer w/ Tom Cruise Looks Promising

Friday, September 26th, 2008

“Valkyrie” is a 2008 historical thriller film directed by Bryan Singer and starring Tom Cruise. The film is based on the July 20 plot of German army officers to assassinate Adolf Hitler. Cruise will portray the leader of the plot, Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg. Cruise’s casting caused controversy among German politicians and members of Stauffenberg’s family due to the actor’s practice of Scientology, though German newspapers and filmmakers gave support to the film to spread global awareness of von Stauffenberg’s attempted plot.

The filmmakers of “Valkyrie” initially had difficulty setting up filming locations in Germany, but they were later given leeway to film in locations pertaining to the film’s story, such as Berlin’s historic Bendlerblock. The release date for Valkyrie has changed numerous times, including a brief move to February 14, 2009. After several positive test screenings, the film’s release was moved up to December 26, 2008.

Concert Review - My Morning Jacket 9/19/08 @ The Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

This was my third time watching My Morning Jacket live in concert and I guess the saying is true that “the third time is the charm” because this show was emotional and electrifying. The night started ominously with some slight rain but as soon as I got to the beautiful Greek Theater the skies cleared up. The cool moist air and sparkling stars were the perfect setting for one of the best concert going experiences I have ever witnessed.

The band’s recent album “Evil Urges” plays better live than on CD, which is saying a lot because the album is an instant classic and one of my favorite records of the year. Haunting songs from that album such as “The Librarian” moved me and my companions to tears. And no, it wasn’t from the billowy clouds of marijuana that rose from the surprisingly half filled venue. The chilled out hipster crowd was ready for a jam session and the band delivered every stoner fans dream with bouncy performances of “I’m Amazed” and “Touch Me I Am Going To Sleep 2″.

The funk inspired “Highly Suspicious” was a highlight of my evening with everyone screaming out the famous line “peanut butter pudding surprise”! Even though we had no idea what it meant we all screamed out the lyric as we did our very own version of the “dead head” hippie twirl. Once the band played hits like “Wordless Chorus” and “Gideon” the crowd erupted into a frenzy. It soon became apparent that the whole place had turned into a dance party.

It has been ages since I went to a show that didn’t have an opening act and only a tight band like My Morning Jacket can pull it off. Even though they only have a few albums of material released the band stretched it all out into a 2 hour and 45 minute masterpiece of perfect showmanship. Every member on stage played meticulously and feverishly with such passion and preciseness it was mesmerizing to watch and I really didn’t want it to end.

If you don’t own a My Morning Jacket album and you consider yourself a music fan then you need to rush out and buy a copy of their landmark album “Z” or their more recent 4 star juggernaut “Evil Urges”. Both their live act and their recordings have an emotional tug and sense of melodic creativity that is truly original without being pretentious. This show was not only fun and entertaining it was extremely thought provoking and groovy.

DVD Review - “The Love Guru”

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2008

NO STARS

The critics tore apart this film when it was released this past summer and I agree with every review that says this movie is a big turkey and almost unwatchable. Mike Meyers vanity project suffers from stale jokes and Meyers own inflated ego which has become uncomfortably unfunny since doing the awful movies “Cat in the Hat” and “Shrek 3″. At least those two films were hits; “The Love Guru” will now go down with “Howard the Duck”, “Hudson Hawk”, “Ishtar” and “Battlefield Earth” in history as one of the biggest flops in cinematic ever.

The pacing and spoof like story line is this movie has already been done in much better films like “Austin Powers”, “Wayne’s World” and more recently in “Hamlet 2″. All the material and dialog in this stinker is familiar and after a while it becomes grating on the nerves. You slowly start to feel sorry for Meyers as you watch him go in and out of a bad Indian accent telling offensive jokes followed by a fart or poop gag. Mike Meyers uses the same old tricks that made him famous over and over; word play, sight gags, obvious product placement, racist humor and crude fat jokes.

For some reason Meyers thinks the movie going public is so interested in Vernon Troyer that we needed to make fun of his size in another slapstick comedy. It would be a shame to hear that Meyers was interested in reviving the “Austin Powers” franchise, because this film might as well have been another movie in the series. And what would a crappy movie be with out the presence of Jessica Alba as over acting? Most of the acting in this film is hacky and absurd. Justin Timberlake’s supporting role even comes off like a bad “Saturday Night Live” skit.

All of the “newer” material used in “The Love Guru” fell flatter than the tired musical numbers peppered through out this ridiculous mess. I just can’t trash this film enough so believe me when I tell you to not even rent it! Maybe (and I mean maybe) if you are sick and falling in and out of a nap you should watch it on cable. It is in your best interest to avoid this movie at all cost if you have fond memories of Mike Meyers in better roles. This movie is not only the brain child of an ego-maniac it is nasty, boring, scattered brained and just plain sad to watch. Mike Meyers star has crashed and burned in the most horrific way.

M.I.A.’s “Paper Planes” Music Video and Song are a Sudden Hit!

Wednesday, September 17th, 2008

“Paper Planes” is the third single from M.I.A.’s second album “Kala”. The album was considered by critics across the globe to be landmark and the best record of 2007. Music purchasers didn’t catch on until this song was used in this past summer’s stoner buddy film “Pineapple Express”.

In an interview in late August 2008, Arulpragasam described the song as being “about people driving cabs all day and living in a shitty apartment and ‘appearing’ really threatening to society. But not being so. Because, by the time you’ve finished working a 20-hour shift, you’re so tired you (just) want to get home to the family”.

On the gunshots and cash register ringing in the song’s chorus, she felt “you can either apply it on a street level and go, oh, you’re talking about somebody robbing you and saying I’m going to take your money. But, really, it could be a much bigger idea: someone’s selling you guns and making money - that’s probably the biggest moneymaker in the world…” adding “It is (a lot for a pop song) but you only have three minutes to put in your thesis.”

The DFA remix from the “Homeland Security” remixes EP of “Paper Planes” is a reggae inspired summer masterpiece and it’s a fresh new interpretation of this hard edged track. However M.I.A.’s innovative brand of world rap music gets its exposure isn’t the issue, it’s letting everyone know that M.I.A. is a force to be watched. She will be considered for years to come as a pioneer and poet. Watch the music video below:

Meryl Streep’s “Doubt” Movie Trailer Looks Like Oscar Bait!

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

Set in 1964, “Doubt” centers on a nun who confronts a priest after suspecting him abusing a black student. He denies the charges, and much of the film’s quick-fire dialogue tackles themes of religion, morality and authority.

The plot of this film already sounds like Oscar bait, and you know if Meryl Streep is involved she is sure to grab a nomination if it is a half decent movie. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Streep receive 2 Golden Globe nominations this year, one for this movie and the other for the mega-hit musical of this summer “Mama Mia!”.

Movie Review - “Burn After Reading”

Tuesday, September 16th, 2008

* 1/2 STARS

After watching the Coen Brothers latest movie I have to say it felt more like they should have “Burned After Watching” the final print. It’s not that this film is a complete waste of celluloid, it’s just that it is a contrived mess with one of the most over acted performances to ever hit the big screen. After a career of highs and lows this film should go in the category of low films that just didn’t click and missed the mark by Joel & Ethan Coen (along with “The Ladykillers” and “Intolerable Cruelty”).

Brad Pitt can’t help but ham up his role as a personal trainer working at a gym called “Hardbodies”. His character is miles away from his off screen persona and within a few moments we can’t help but see Pitt desperately trying to be a “normal guy”. The world’s sexiest man can’t quite pull off the bumbling idiot type and it slowly becomes obnoxious. Pitt’s over acting is just plain unbelievable and it is a big casting mis-step by last year’s Oscar winners for “No Country for Old Men”.

I never thought I would complain about gratuitous gore and over the top violence, but some how in this movie it seems out of place and unnecessary. The first 45 minutes of “Burn” is a boring set up for the ridiculous and forced action of the second half. The whole movie ends up looking like a wreck comprised up of fancy cinematography, over the top carnage and a lot of uncomfortable laughs. It seems the Coen Brothers have set out to make a film about morons that no one cares about.

I went into this film hoping for another original slice of twisted Americana but came out feeling unsatisfied and almost ripped off. The Coen Brothers have not broken any new ground here or given us anything worth cheering about with “Burn After Reading”. If anything this movie feels like a contractual obligation or a second thought. The witty and unique style you have come to expect from these talented film makers is nowhere to be seen in this short one and a half hour experiment in comedy violence.

Normally having great actors like Francis McDormand, George Clooney and John Malcovich in a film guarantees a certain level of enjoyment (even in bad movies) but none of these seasoned veterans could make this film any more likable. Their characters and performances seem familiar and recycled from previous roles that made them the distinct stars they are today. All of the actors involved with “Burn” over act in each of their scenes, and not in the campy fun way you would hope for.

I wish that the Coen Brothers would just stick to riveting crime films and intriguing character studies about odd people. Every time these guys come out with a screwball comedy they gamble and usually lose (”The Hudsucker Proxy” anyone?). But when the Brothers hit a home run a great movie like “Raising Arizona” or “Oh Brother Where Art Thou” is made. At the very least it’s worth watching each of their new films (even a bomb like this) just to get that one great classic that reminds you of their talents. Unfortunately “Burn After Reading” is a throw away comedy and should go down as one of the famous duo’s worst movies to date.

TV Show Review - “Do Not Disturb”

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

GRADE: D

after watching the new FOX TV show “Do Not Disturb” I’ve coem to conclusion that the hilariously sassy talents of Nicey Nash are best used in basic cable. Her TV shows “Clean House” and “Reno 911″ are two of my favorite junk TV staples on my Tivo/DVR Recorder. It’s too bad her talents are wasted on her first primetime sitcom which is filmed in front of a live audience (with the help of a laugh track of couse).

Her recent network TV show outing “Do Not Disturb” is not as smart as high brow primetime fair such as “30 Rock”, but it isn’t as repulsive as the #1 sitcom on TV, CBS’s “Two and a Half Men” (which is not saying much). Sadly, this new sitcom is just another failed attempt by primetime networks to salvage a dying genre pioneered by classics such as “Cheers”, “Seinfeld” and “Friends”.

As fun as it is to watch Nash ham it up and deliver her trademark attitude (ala’ 80’s TV show icon Jackee’ from “227″) it’s Jerry O’Connell who falls flat as the smarmy over sexed hotel manager. Nicey knows how to plow through bad writing and recycled sitcom jokes but O’Connell can’t deliver a joke to save his life. The only thing that makes this show watchable is Nash’s effortless comedic presence.

NICEY NASH

80′S TV SITCOM ICON JACKEE’

The presence of too many supporting characters and the multiple corny “paint by numbers” plots in “Do Not Disturb” confirm the death of the laugh track sitcom. Premature ejaculation, laughing at fat girls, meth addicts, gay men flirting with eachother and sex at work are the kind of jokes the producers of this show think people will laugh at within a half hour show. The humor is childish and crude at best, the sub-plots are convoluted and void of anything funny every time.

It’s almost insulting that this is the only real sitcom out of the 4 main networks that is getting any serious hype. Another show, CBS’s “Worst Week” looks to be more of the same slapstick stuff with a clumsy lead taking hits for laughs. Only NBC’s non-laugh track sitcom “Kath & Kim” has me giddy with anticipation due to the brilliant source material (a hilarious Australian TV show of the same name) and the actresses involved (Molly Shannon and Selma Blair). I thank my stars I have new episodes of “The Office” and “30 Rock” coming back to the air waves later this month to satisfy my adult taste for witty site gags and crafty sitcom writing!

DVD Review - “What Happens In Vegas”

Thursday, September 11th, 2008

NO STARS

“What Happens In Vegas” is the worst cornball romantic comedy I have seen in many years. It is one of those movies where you realize within the first 5 minutes the actors involved were just cashing a paycheck without reading the script. The premise is right out of an amateurish sitcom where everything is just a big misunderstanding and it all gets resolved in the end with a big cheesy love-fest that is unrealistic.

Watching Cameron Diaz mug for the camera gets pretty sad real fast. I mean she has been nominated for an Academy Award for Christ’s sake! We have come to depend on Ashton Kutcher to ham it up as the lame character that has nothing to offer but being a hot annoying goof ball with no brains, so there are no surprises with this latest over the top performance.

The obvious character set up and tired “rom-com” plot are so predictable you know within the first few frames how the movie will play out. Not even usually brilliant character actors like Rob Corddry (in ANOTHER crude “best friend” role) or SNL’s Jason Sudeikis can save this lame duck from coming off as just “run of the mill” and ploddingly simple. The physical humor and fart jokes are ridiculous and embarrassing to watch. The whole film crumbles within the first 15 minutes making the rest of the film basically unwatchable.

This film has many bad things going for it; painful acting, horrible screenwriting, insulting humor and offensive jokes. There is not one original thought or sincere moment in this movie. So far this film is the worst movie I have seen all year, and I am sure nothing else is likely to make me want to vomit in my mouth as much as “What Happens in Vegas” did. Yuck!
