Music C.D. Review - Lily Allen “Alright Still”
GRADE: A

In the last few years we have seen a plethora of little pixie pop princesses come through the scene with great results: Jem, Feist, Nelly Furtado, Annie, Juliet and the queen of them all Dido.
Lily Allen gives another fresh view on an already saturated genre. But it works, and works well. I love the sassy, rapping, silly lyrical twists that Lily Allen plays with. Her style is familiar, but she churns out a solid list of ditties. Pop music is at its best when it fuses multi-ethnic genres and past influences to meld together a new sound. Lily Allen captures that fun just like Nelly Furtado does. Instead of latin flair, or world sound Lily Allen uses reggae grooves and hip hop flows to accent her pop flavored raps and lyrics.
Favorite Tracks:
“Smile” - Love the lyrics and hook. Her spoken voice is sweet and her thick British accent is sexy and fresh.
“Alfie” - A great electronic, high pop confection, beware of the cavity factor…cheesy!
“Ldn” - This is a mix of sounds, culture and pop I love..eclectic and reminiscent of Brazilian samba and jazz. There are also HEAVY reggae sounds and influences all over the c.d. which make it fun and poppy.
This c.d. is already a smash in the UK and Europe of course. I think this c.d. has cross over appeal and could jump the pond and be a mild success here in the states. The USA will never know TRUE pop genius like the European’s do. They love their teen diva’s and pixie-esque pop tarts. With all of the attention going to rap, country and hip-hop in this country people just don’t get how necessary and relevent pop music is.
Example: Robbie Williams….and this c.d. too…
